Experience a cinematic romance for the ages, with a double pass to see The History of Sound.

Academy Award® nominee Paul Mescal (Aftersun, Normal People) and Emmy Award® winner Josh O’Connor (Challengers, The Crown) star in this sweeping, moving and tender romance from Oliver Hermanus (Living).

In 1917, Lionel (Mescal), a young, talented music student — meets David (O’Connor) at the Boston Conservatory, where they bond over a deep love of folk music. Years later, Lionel receives a letter from David, leading to an impromptu journey through the backwoods of Maine to collect traditional songs. This unexpected reunion, ensuing love affair, and the music they collect and preserve, will shape the course of Lionel’s life far beyond his own awareness.  

Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor’s performances received rave reviews when The History of Sound premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, both “understated and powerful”,  5 stars (NME) and described as "The year's most moving drama." (HEADLINE).

Making this quiet, deeply emotional but powerful drama a must-see.

  • All One New Zealand customers are eligible to enter the promotion which runs from Monday 1 December 2025 at 12:00am to Sunday 14 December 2025 at 11:59pm.
  • To enter, click the ‘Enter now’ button above. There is one entry per person.
  • There are five (5) winners for the competition. Each prize includes:
    • One (1) double pass to see The History of Sound valid at any participating cinema showing this film.
  • The prize draw will be conducted on Monday 15 December 2025 by representatives of One New Zealand by random electronic draw.
  • The winners will be contacted on Monday 15 December 2025 using the details provided as part of your My One NZ registration. If the winners cannot be reached within 48 hours, One New Zealand will have sole and absolute discretion to draw the prize again and award the prize to a new winner.
  • This film is screening at a limited number of cinemas across New Zealand. Details of participating cinemas will be provided directly to the winners.
  • The prize is not redeemable for cash, cannot be substituted with an alternative prize or sold. The prize must be used while the movie is still showing in cinemas, it will not be replaced if it is not used in time.  
  • The prize will be organised by representatives of One New Zealand and will be couriered to your chosen New Zealand address as soon as it becomes available.
  • Entry into the Competition is deemed to be acceptance of these terms and conditions.
