Inspired by true events, the film will tell the story of octogenarian Bernard Jordan’s escape from his care home to attend the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings in France: In the summer of 2014 Bernard Jordan (Michael Caine) made global headlines. He’d staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades.
It was a story that captured the imagination of the world - Bernie seemed to embody the defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. But of course, it wasn’t the whole story. It was the story we all tell ourselves to make war and old age bearable. The bitter-sweet script explores the reality with wit and a very big heart.
Bernie’s adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (Glenda Jackson) - the story celebrates their love without sentimentality and with an eye to the lessons we might all learn from the Greatest Generation.

There are ten (10) winners for the competition. Each prize includes:
One (1) double pass to see The Great Escaper valid at any participating cinema showing this film.
The prize draw will be conducted on Wednesday 6 March 2024 by representatives of One New Zealand by random electronic draw.
The winners will be contacted on Wednesday 6 March 2024 using the details provided as part of your My One NZ registration. If the winners cannot be reached within 48 hours, One New Zealand will have sole and absolute discretion to draw the prize again and award the prize to a new winner.
The prize is not redeemable for cash, cannot be substituted with an alternative prize or sold. The prize must be used while the movie is still showing in cinemas, it will not be replaced if it is not used in time.
The prize will be organised by representatives of One New Zealand and will be couriered to the winners chosen New Zealand address as soon as it becomes available. The winners will be asked to provide a postal address when responding to their winner’s notification email.
Entry into the Competition is deemed to be acceptance of these terms and conditions.
